I think everyone in life has his or her heroes and role models. I of course am no different in that regard. As a writer and admirer of all things Western, naturally I am drawn to characters both fictional and real. Clint Eastwood, the Earp Brothers, Gus and Call of "Lonesome Dove" fame just name a few.
However, my heroes are not restricted to only one facet of life. Music has been a very important part of my life since early childhood. On this page, I would like pay special homage to the person most influential in my life, past, future and present, perhaps the greatest outlaw of them all, Mr. Hughie Thomasson of the Outlaws. Sadly, he passed away Sept. 9th of 2007 at the young age of 55. The talented singer/songwriter and guitarist created such classics as "Green Grass & High Tides" and "There goes Another Love Song," and my personal favorite, "Hurry Sundown." Perhaps he will likely be more thought of for his incredible rock rendition of the standard "Ghost Riders in the Sky." It is said, "one should never meet your heroes, you'll just be disappointed." Well, I took the chance on more than one occasion and will forever be glad I did! I will never forget walking away from conversations with Mr. Thomasson feeling a great sense of joy knowing that I was not to be let down. A more humble and gracious person I could have never met. Hughie leaves behind a great, loving family, as I too someday will.
Music and literature share one important common link. Although their creators eventually must leave us, their creations will last forever! Rest in Peace Mr. Cowboy.
